Is my ski equipment insured?
Did you know
Michigan is home to the Midwest’s highest vertical drop? If you’re an avid
skier, you may well know this and many other facts about Michigan’s rural and
quasi-suburban skiing opportunities, both downhill and cross-country. In fact,
Michigan is second-highest in the nation for the number of ski areas in a state.
With that in mind,
you may be tempted to head right out to a park or the slopes, but don’t rush
off without looking at your homeowners or renter’s insurance policy first. You
want to make sure that your equipment has the proper coverage.
Many homeowner’s
policies offer basic coverage for theft, fire and a limited number of other
causes of damage to personal property, but high-value sports equipment might
require a special addition to your homeowners or renter’s policy, such as an
endorsement or a personal property floater. Your Trusted
Choice® Independent Insurance Agent can help you determine if your policy needs
to be enhanced to gain full coverage for your skis, boots, poles, helmets, boot
bag, ski bag, goggles and whatever other items you love to take with you. If
your things are stolen from a lodge, an airport, or simply a ski park you’re
visiting for a day, you will want the fullest coverage possible.
With a properly
written policy, your coverage will travel with you anywhere in the United
States. If you plan to travel abroad, check your policy’s terms. Often, Canada
is included, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.
If you own a place
in the mountains and store your ski equipment there instead of hauling it from
home, you need to talk to your Trusted Choice® agent
about your coverage, since policies for secondary residences may be more
restrictive than those for primary homes. Ask about personal property or
contents coverage for your vacation home to make sure the things you keep
stored there are adequately insured.
With the right policy terms, your investment in
quality ski equipment can be protected while traveling to the slopes as well as
aprรจs-ski events.
